SBCA Foundation Awards Grant to Tumor Research

The SBCA Foundation donated $10,000 to Angels Among Us to help in the fight against brain cancer. The day raised over $2,000,000. Since its founding in 1994, over 12 million dollars has been donated to The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke from Angels Among Us.

On Saturday April 20th, the SBCA Foundation, (click here to see photos from the event) along with local consumer satellite industry professionals from DSI, DOW, Mastec and three local satellite businesses took part. The day included a certified 5K run through the Duke campus, and a family walk led by cancer survivors around the Duke Cancer Center and Duke South and on through the beautiful Sarah P. Duke Gardens. Over 5,500 individuals attended the event. The SBCA and our participating companies had a tent prominently located in the center of the activities. Visitors to our tent were able to speak with local representatives, play games and receive promotional giveaways.

The highlight of the day was the satellite industry representatives being given the opportunity to present the check to Allan and Henry Friedman, Deputy Directors of the Tisch Brain Cancer Center. They are internationally recognized physician scientists who have had many decades of experience studying and treating brain and spinal cord tumors. They and the faculty and staff are committed to finding new treatments and to providing the very best care to the patients that seek their help.

After the presentation we had many individuals in the audience thank us and mention that they had satellite service. The event allowed The Foundation to achieve its goal of providing to a great cause.

A special thank you to Dave Robison who was one of the featured speakers at the Cancer Centers Board of Directors meeting Friday evening. Dave is also a cancer survivor and is testimony to the great work this organization does.

About the SBCA Foundation

The SBCA Foundation will place emphasis on health, welfare and education projects that benefit specific communities and populations where the consumer-based satellite industry has a presence. The amount of money or goods allocated to grants will be based on need and will be implemented in areas where similar efforts are not already underway, so as to reflect the unique purpose and character of the consumer-based satellite industry. Grants will be awarded on a schedule and according to a set of guidelines to be established by the Board of the Foundation and implemented by SBCA staff. Particular emphasis will be given to projects and needs in areas of the U.S. where the satellite industry is a well known and valued service.

The SBCA Foundation will rely on feedback from the network of manufacturers, distributors, instillation providers and retailers who all have a part in providing satellite services to the customer. They recognize that these businesses are important in their local communities and understand their needs best.

The initial Board of Directors are Andrew Reinsdorf of DIRECTV, Jeffery Blum of DISH Network, Greg Frasca of Sky Web Digital Media, Michael Scherr of CASE-SRS Distribution, Dave Robison of DSI System, Lee. Hess of INSTALLS Inc.and Joseph Widoff of SBCA.

The SBCA Foundation Grant Request Form - Due Jan. 15, 2014

The SBCA Foundation was established in order to support the efforts of individuals and companies in the consumer-based satellite video and broadband industry who are making a contribution to improve the lives of the people in their communities.

In some cases, it will be individuals in our industry who have devoted time and effort to some worthy community effort (homeless shelter, working with returning veterans, literacy, etc.) In other cases it might be an entire company that has committed to a project or mission (helping to build a house for Habitat for Humanity, rebuilding a community center destroyed by a hurricane, etc.)

Grants will be made to eligible non-profit organizations on behalf of the individual and/or company involved. Requests will be accepted from any individual or company.

The Foundation is particularly interested in projects that focus on:
1. Needs of at-risk populations such as the homeless, hungry, children, veterans or similar groups.
2. Rural and disadvantaged communities where satellite video and data services provide a vital link to information, education and entertainment programming.
3. Organizations supporting populations where English is a second language.
4. Areas that have experienced a natural or other disaster.

.
How the Grant Process Works
1. Individuals and companies within the industry can directly submit requests for potential recipients to the SBCA Foundation.
2. The SBCA Foundation staff will review the applications from completion and accuracy.
3. SBCA Foundation staff will then bring a list of proposed recipients to the Board for approval.
